The people and places of Odessa

Healthcare

Odessa is one of the few communities of its size fortunate to have its own health care center, with one physician, a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, a clinic, acute care unit, long-term care unit and assisted living apartments.  A $4 million renovation was completed in 2006.

OMHC, operated by Lincoln County Hospital District #1, serves a vast area in which there are no other medical care facilities. However, through telemedicine, health care networks and managed care systems, the hospital district provides the most advanced, technology in medicine to a rural area.

A heliport on the roof of the hospital is used by helicopters airlifting patients to Spokane hospitals, when needed. OMHC recently remodeled the physical therapy departments giving it a whole new look and attitude. The expanded facility includes solarium and private rooms for therapy treatment. Odessa’s excellent health care resources have been a factor in attracting retirees and others who seek the tranquility of rural living.

OMHC has been serving the community since 1950, when it was established through community effort. It has been enlarged over the years, and today it has a 25-bed critical access unit, a nursing home occupying a wing of the hospital building with 22 beds, and the Odessa Clinic, housed in an adjacent building.

The hospital district opened a 12-unit assisted living complex in 1998. The apartments, each with a kitchenette and private bath, respond to new trends in health care. They serve persons who are not now in need of full nursing home care and wish to have a degree of independence.

Two dentists, a chiropractor, a massage therapist and a pharmacist round out the medical services available in Odessa.

The Odessa Healthcare Foundation, hosts the largest fund-raising event, for the OMHC, the first Friday in May. The wine and microbrew tasting party is held at Odessa’s Community Center. The event includes a silent and live auction and has become the event of the year for Odessa and many surrounding communities. Items that are auctioned include a fishing trip to Alaska, jewelry, gift baskets and hosted dinners. Each year the monies raised are used for a specific project.
